RR-145 The Building Block of the Modern World One might say that our Information Age really began with the invention of the Transistor in 1947 by Bell Labs, who had applied semiconductors to create the first solid state transistor. The importance of this is that it creates a special, electronic gate that allows just enough voltage in when voltage (or no voltage) is applied at another point. This allows the gate to basically act as a logical device that only allows something to happen when certain conditions are met. When you multiply this dozens of times, and then apply that on a silicon wafer, and hook electrodes to it, you get the Integrated Circuit; in effect, an entire circuit board in miniature to perform certain functions. Multiply that by thousands, even millions of times, and you get not only an IC, you get a processor. It is this innovation that has allows the things in this world that we take for granted, from our electric toasters to our smartphones, to be smaller and lighter. We’re long gone from the days when 386 computers were the latest in computer technology and pizza was delivered in 30 minutes or less or it’s free. Things are changing so rapidly that sometimes it’s tough to keep abreast of what the latest technology can do. It could be said that the biggest star of all of the Star Trek shows is the USS Enterprise. Without the Enterprise, in all likelihood the original Star Trek probably would not have worked out as well as it did. Every space opera needs a distinctive ship and the Enterprise is arguably the most distinctive, and quite beautiful compared with fictional spacecraft such as the Battlestar Galactica or the Imperial Star Destroyer. Created by modeler Matt Jeffries, the Enterprise’s design of a primary hull, a secondary hull, powered by two cigar-shaped engine nacelles is evocative in some ways of the old wooden ships of sail, where the primary means of motion was by means of sails on tall masts, resulting in the most iconic fictional spacecraft in the history of science fiction. Unless you’ve been living in a cave like a hermit during the last forty or so years, you’d immediately recognize the Enterprise when you see it. Recently she’s had numerous updates, with several incarnations to represent new versions of the starship Enterprise over the course of decades, but the general design had remained the same.
