Renting a tuxedo is not being low-rent or cheap. You do not have to (or should not have to) pay hundreds to thousands of dollars on a suit you will only wear once or a few times a year. Instead, when you rent a tux, you pay both for being fashion forward and for the limited time that you wear the ensemble. It makes financial and sartorial sense. If you do not want to buy a tux for the few occasions you wear them, renting is much better than opting out. For an event that requires the classy, upscale elegance of a tux, you will only look under dressed, scruffy, or unappreciative if you pretend that the tuxedo is out as a formal style. When an invitation to a dinner or wedding says that a tuxedo is optional, take that as a demand to wear one. Do not be the lowest common denominator.
