Mid July and there is, for the first time a sense of seasonal change in evening air. Certain leaves are beginning to turn fresh inspiration for fashion designers

But don’t think doom and gloom, conversely its cause for celebration, when the autumn leaves start falling, new fashions will be blooming.

Near on September fresh styles will be hitting the decks of the high street stores and, the economy willing, shoppers will be out in droves.

The really good news is for men, finally there will be out of ordinary natural enough floral’s to choose from.

For the adventurous there are floral suits and some dandy hats, it’s the 70’s all over, a very productive decade for many of the arts, music, style innovation and architecture.

And to brighten up any grey autumn skies there will be plenty of men’s jewellery to dress up your outfit.

The line up is impressive, new designers eking out an existence along side the rich and famous, but regardless of your position in the industry hierarchy, the essence is in the flower (the product)

When a fashion designer thinks I’ve made, it will be the beginning of their decline. We’ve seen it happen to many, there is no immunity once the creative drive is consumed by power and revenue the end is nigh.

Ian Flaherty has been around a long time always worth a mention because of his Swarovski Crystal Cube Cufflinks, which has been mimicked by many other brands. But one has been able improve on the original.

Vivienne Westwood needs no introduction but her designs do, because they change with the season. The focus on improving the status men’s jewellery is working well. In her mid 60’s is at the peak of creativity.

A little taste: The Diamante Red Orb, for the passionate, the “Yes No Maybe” for the undecided, the “Touch Wood” for the superstitious and our favourite the multi coloured mini orb.

For the traditionalists there is the classic “To Fast To Too Young To Die” in skull and cross bones and large Army Tags.

She is not known greatly for gift wear, but there is one to mention, The Swiss Army Knife, complete with skull and cross bones fully authenticated with Vivienne Westwood’s signature on the back.

Now it’s time to paddle our on drum. As a virtually unknown designer brand we’ve introduced a range of silk ties that challenge conservatism, but also conform through using floral’s and more traditional stripes and checks.

But coming in September the range increases mainly in the direction of floral, why? because of compliance to consumer demand.

For us, being unknown is not a weakness, it’s a challenge and an opportunity to work in coalition with brands such as Timothy Everest, Ian Flaherty, Veritas, Vivienne Westwood Our role is increasing awareness of their collections via the internet.

Like any industry, you can’t go it alone and expect to succeed. As an independent retailer we acknowledge the importance of interdependency.

We are influenced by other designers, but also draw inspiration from the natural environment that surrounds us and culminate with a little history.

One last thing; collar stiffeners, if you’re frustrated with collars turning under at the end, or bulging in the middle? Then a pair of London Badge and Button collar stiffeners will solve both problems.

They will also perform the function of holding your tie knot firmly in place all day. Because Lbb use resin you don’t to worry about them coming out of the wash if you forget.

A practitioner of strategic planning in business alignment: He is developing a new brand of fashion accessories for men as a truly independent alternative: Concurrently purveying designer silk ties, silver, crystal and enamel cufflinks, fine leather wallets, plus a collection of jewellery by noted British designers, such as, Vivienne Westwood, Timothy Everest, Ian Flaherty, Veritas, Lbb London, Simon Carter, Michelsons and Shane McCoubrey. Perpetuating traditional English made clothing accessories is part of our ethos.

English school teachers always marked my essays the same way “grammar, poor”, “subject matter, good” Their negative comment never deterred me, because from a very young age I’d figured out that the value was in the “subject matter”. Of course my volition was never to be a writer. At that point in time I was too busy to even think about the future. But one day I had to grow up and make important decisions. So I decided on a career in business. And that’s been my life’s work developing business concepts, employing my creative imagination, “no grammar necessary” .Now in my most recent venture, an online shopping service selling men’s fashion accessories. I find the most enjoyable thing is writing articles about the evolution of style and the progress of fashion through the ages.

One can always find good subject matter, grammar becomes secondary, and besides look at the effect American English (Microsoft Spell-check) has on the English language. What has happened to punctuation and capitalisation? What’s important is subject and facts. Subject is the foundation of any article no matter the quality; it’s what you believe in.

I’ve enjoyably, written hundreds of short articles, including critiques (product reviews). And as a result of many hours research have discovered some fascinating historic anecdotes that many people, even avid experts had no knowledge.

The original motivation was to increase back links to my newly formed transactional website and in turn achieve a page one ranking with all the major search engines. This was part of an urgent strategy to avoid the ongoing high cost of cost per click. But I soon found my motivation changed and is now driven by enjoyment and the fact that I can actually succeed in something that for many years others saw as a weakness (English Grammar).

Writing allows me to exercise my creative imagination, use a little poetic license without fear of any retribution. I can write what I like and at the same time increase back-links to my site. And there’s no teacher cold minded breathing hot air down my neck, intent on controlling and dominating

So now I’ve included some of my favourite fashion critiques amongst some fascinating historic anecdotes.

Here Are A Few Of My Favourite Historic Anecdotes: They tell so much about style as it happened without any thought of actually creating a fashion trend that would survive many decades.

1860

Bertie, the rakish Prince of Wales, ordered a short smoking jacket to wear at informal dinner parties at Sandringham from his friend, the tailor, Henry Poole. It was the first dinner jacket on record and was cut in midnight blue cloth. In 1886, a Mr James Potter of Tuxedo Park, New York, was a houseguest at Sandringham. He consequently ordered a similar dinner jacket to Bertie’s from Henry Poole & Co. It was this dinner jacket that Mr Potter wore at the Tuxedo Park Club inspiring numerous copies that fellow members wore as informal uniform for stag dinners. Thus the Tuxedo was born at Henry Poole & Co. It took only eight years for an accidental style to cross the Atlantic Ocean and soon became an American institution. Its humble, royal beginnings were soon forgotten when labelled the Tuxedo.

1971

Maverick screen actress Katherine Hepburn, whose long-term lover Spencer Tracey was a customer of Huntsman, takes the extraordinary step of ordering bespoke denim jeans from her late lover’s Savile Row tailor. Hepburn’s commission foreshadows bespoke denim collections launched in 2006 by Timothy Everest and Evisu.

1880

The rowing club at Oxford Universities Exeter College invented the first school ties. After an emotional win over their rivals, they celebrated by removing their ribbon hat bands from their boater hats and tying them, four in hand around their necks. When they ordered a set of ties, with the colours from their hatbands, they had accidentally created the modern school tie. Schools, clubs, and athletic ties appeared in abundance. Some schools had different ties for various grades, levels of achievement, and for graduates. Thanks to historians and their method of accurate documentation all the original college colours are still available from archived samples and replicate ties can be made to order.

Here Are a few of my favourite self indulgent critiques

This is where I exercise my creative imagination and poetic license no matter how naïve they may seem.

One

Men’s wallets have recently been elevated to fashion accessories status, originally created to perform a specific function, to carry paper money; we’ve just given it a much needed face lift. Functionality not lost, designers like Paul Smith, Simon Carter, and Richard James have brought wallets out of the dark and into the light. Vivid colours embossed on their covers and linings with depictions of comic cartoon strips started appearing, even bikini clad women and mini minors. Richard James a Savile Row tailor uses vibrant pinks, purples and burgundy on the inside flaps to create individuality for his brand. Top stitching is also widely used to create some interest. Then Simon Carter came up with a real winner, the Jeans wallet, made from ultra fine, tender calf hide, it’s slim and thin with just enough compartments for cards and cash. It slips nicely into the back pocket of event the tightest jeans with ease and it feels so good in the hand.

Two

A new range of enamel cufflinks by Ian Flaherty have quietly arrived on the market. They’re beautifully formed from English Pewter, giving life to lifeless forms. There is a horse and rider in breathless pursuit of the unfortunate Fox, the Mallard and Partridge, Pheasant, and Trout, all brought to still life by the artistic prowess of Ian Flaherty. You can surf the net and trod the high streets, but you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that compares with Ian’s latest work.

Three

Here is a brand that’s on the up; she’s made all the right moves and a name befitting a jeweller, or exotic dancer. Babette Wasserman, a lover of the Swarovski Crystal, she displays it maximisation style and sets her place as a cufflink designer amongst men. Women bring a refreshing slant to men’s accessories, a little femininity firmed to cuff, a constant reminder of soft and inviting contours and sweet scented women. Like the cufflinks, like the woman.

Four

One prime example is Timothy Everest, a long time emerging Savile Row tailor, his designer silk ties (Spitalfields Flower) impress upon you the conservatism expected of Savile Row, but with a unique originality, affordable luxury best describes Timothy’s ties, made in England with the Savile Row stamp of approval.

To conclude: In essence my strength in literature (subject) over powered my weakness (grammar) “It’s not how you write its why” subject is the foundation.

If you’ve enjoyed any part of this article or learned something then I’d really like to hear from you.

Ian Flaherty, Timothy Everest, Simon Carter, Veritas, Lbb London, and Shane McCoubrey, Cressida Bell, Victoria Richards, Neil Bottle, Babbette Wasserman, one thing they all have in common, British, but to be fair here is another name, Louis Feraud, French.

An Opening Anecdote

In 1971 Katherine took the extraordinary step of ordering tailor made blue denim jeans from her late lover’s Savile Row tailor. Hepburn’s commission foreshadowed bespoke denim collections launched in 2006 by Timothy Everest and Evisu.

Louis Feraud Floral Designer Tie

A colourful silk tie that reflects the brilliant hues of autumn by Louis Feraud, using tightly clad floral shapes that fill the tie completely. Semblance of an autumn day: Following in the footsteps of Jean Patou, a Paris fashion designer who invented the designer tie in 1920 Feraud sought to introduce a touch of femininity to men’s accessories, after all women buy 3 out of 4 ties. But Feraud was more than a fashion designer; he was an artist and entrepreneur and sought the success of his brand name as much as he did his paintings. Now for an ideal pair of cufflinks to match, easy enough, a floral rendition using Mother of Pearl by Simon Carter.

Simon Carter Mother of Pearl Petal Cufflinks

Mother of Pearl, the best that nature has to offer, transformed into a floral master piece by Simon carter. In this instance, the latest laser cutting technology for precision and economics is used to cut and shape Mother of Pearl. The delicate petals frame beautifully a small crystal representing the bud. The intervention of modern technology makes these gems affordable. Want a matching tie for these designer cufflinks? Look no further than this page.

Shane McCoubrey’s Signature Designer Silk Tie

The Splashes silk tie, as Shane calls it, has been the hallmark of his success as a fashion designer. After working for Gucci and Vuitton he decided to harness his energies and start his own brand, since then he has never looked back. Conde-Nast, Drapers and other respected fashion magazines have featured the man and his products. But Shane is bent on keeping a low profile so he can continue playing a hand on role and stay ahead of the game designing men’s fashion accessories that stand out from the crowd. His Splashes range of silk ties certainly achieves this status. On a base of rich cream faintly overlaid pink and silver stripes are overlaid again with brilliant splashes of colour arranged randomly, forming an abstract pattern, a tie to behold and a very popular choice for weddings. One thing is for certain you won’t have to worry about sitting next to someone who is wearing the same tie. “Worth more than a look” Now the only matching cufflink imaginable “Cube Multi Coloured Swarovski Crystal Cufflink” by Ian Flaherty London, like the splashes tie it sports hundreds of miniature coloured crystals that catch the light at every turn and mirror perfectly the brilliance of Shane’s masterpiece.

A closing Anecdote

Paris fashion designer, Jean Patou, invented the designer tie. He made silk ties from women’s clothing material including patterns inspired by the latest art movements of the day, Cubism and Art Deco.

Targeted toward women purchasers, his were highly successful. Today women buy 80 percent of sold in the US. Therefore ties are often displayed near the perfume or women’s clothing departments.

Designer ties made quite a splash in the 1960s, when designers from London’s Carnaby Street devised the Peacock Look and churned out wide, colourful ties in a variety of flowered, abstract and psychedelic patterns. Know mod (for modern) styles were the forerunners of the hippie movement, which often dispensed with neckties altogether, often favouring colourful scarves at the neck, or wearing open shirts with chains or medallions.

Selling men’s luxury fashion accessories online offers the great advantage of knowing hour by hour what customers are seeking through the keywords they enter and the products that they eventually buy. This is market research in its most immediate form, real time and factual. We know what they are looking for, because they tell us without prompting and often in great detail. In fact we can analyse at the press of a button the average time a customer spends viewing a product, from this we deduce whether or not they are reading the product descriptions.

Having this kind of information at our fingertips means we adapt very quickly to customer demands, which can change as quickly and often as English skies. It’s a bit like sailing into an unpredictable wind; you must tack quickly and often to avoid getting swamped or capsizing. We use this as a synonym to drive our motivation and team work, which includes close association with designer brands, who rely on our statistical data to aid their product design development.

It’s all about supply and demand, giving the masses what they want and not telling them “you can have any colour tie as long as it’s black” this mentality died with the model T Ford.

One recent example cited is the shifting trend in demand for cufflinks from novelty to classical. For industry members and designers this is like the relief of the first rain that broke a long draught. In the annals of cufflink history the 80s through has been formally classified as the whimsical era “once the novelty wears off”

We were able to identify the shifting trends and rapidly respond by featuring a range of classical cufflinks based on styles from the 70’s and straight away met customer demand; suddenly we had a best seller on our hands. Thus adhering to the golden rule “supply and demand”, we listen to our customers rather than dictate to them. We’re not going to just sit around and hope customers will come knocking.

To abide, London Badge and Button were quick on the uptake; they released a small range silver cufflinks based on archived styles from the seventies. One in particular; using a slightly convex shape combing brushed and highly polished variants to imply depth and gold and silver to add interest. It turns out these delightfully simple numbers are a best seller. Lbb didn’t want to thrash a dead horse so they employed two young energetic designers to combine economics and appeal. The result is a delightful range of cufflinks, even the sterling silver styles are affordable thanks to clever design and modern manufacturing technology.

Veritas Gifts never swayed from their classical roots; “What goes around comes around” style is constant, it’s paid off. Their consistent best seller is the sterling silver “Bar Bell” and “Bell with Bar” Simple engraving maximises the use of texture giving relief to a very flat plane. It’s often the subtleties in jewellery that take time to filter through, but they create the lasting impressions.

Working together with designer brands we are able to respond to changing customer demand thanks to internet technology.
