Australia, often referred to as the land down under, is also well known for its beautiful beaches and abundant, interesting and unique wildlife. Sydney and the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge are its cultural icons so, of course, I made it a point to visit the city during one of my vacations. Believe me, it was all it’s touted to be and more! The many beaches that studded this coastal city each had its own character and attraction. The Opera House was indeed an architectural feat and the Harbour Bridge was an engineering wonder. The best attraction in the area, however, was the Sydney Aquarium. So far, it has been the largest aquarium I have ever seen. The area it had allotted for its display of fresh and saltwater crocs and alligators was both scary and fascinating. I remember my husband and I avidly witnessing the alligator feeding frenzy during one of the scheduled shows. If they were humans, it would have been a bloodbath! Those few enthralling moments are among the memories I probably would never forget. I thought, how weak men were compared to these alligators; yet, how powerful were we still to be able to keep such magnificent creatures in captivity. I have since bought these alligator cufflinks I once chanced upon to always remind me of those realizations. It was a great Aussie experience for me, made even more poignant by these cufflinks I now own. My husband said they were funny cufflinks – words he uses to refer to all things non-traditional – but all rebuttals are quashed when I remind him of why I bought them in the first place. I think he, too, really enjoyed our trip to Sydney and, admit it or not, is similarly reminded of happy times.

I wanted something that represented something special in both our lives, an iconic reminder of happy moments or even challenging ones as long as it could become a symbol of our love. My girl friend who has kindly agreed to help me shop — yeah, right, I had to twist her arm – told me that it was a tall order for a single gift on a budget. She was quite a lot of help shooting down my earlier choices. From furniture to scrapbooks, my friend vetoed each suggestion. I often reluctantly acceded to her decision, that is, until we came upon the cufflinks. These gold elephant cufflinks were just the cutest pair I have ever seen. My friend was skeptical about the animal cufflinks, noting that it really looked more like jewelry than a functional piece. I thought about it but just didn’t have the heart not to buy it. My husband I got married secretly in Thailand, you see. He first proposed on the back of an elephant while we were on a safari, our last real date before the wedding. I knew this was it. Even if my friend didn’t get it, I knew my husband would. So, despite my best friend’s protests, I bought the cufflinks and had them wrapped really prettily inside a Thai silk box. This was the something special only I and my husband could understand. Now, I just can’t wait to take that trip down our romantic Chiang Mai memory lane.
