It could be said that the biggest star of all of the Star Trek shows is the USS Enterprise. Without the Enterprise, in all likelihood the original Star Trek probably would not have worked out as well as it did. Every space opera needs a distinctive ship and the Enterprise is arguably the most distinctive, and quite beautiful compared with fictional spacecraft such as the Battlestar Galactica or the Imperial Star Destroyer. Created by modeler Matt Jeffries, the Enterprise’s design of a primary hull, a secondary hull, powered by two cigar-shaped engine nacelles is evocative in some ways of the old wooden ships of sail, where the primary means of motion was by means of sails on tall masts, resulting in the most iconic fictional spacecraft in the history of science fiction. Recently she’s had numerous updates, with several incarnations to represent new versions of the starship Enterprise over the course of decades, but the general design had remained the same.
