Who Should Go To Prison, Really?

prisonbars Who Should Go To Prison, Really?Jeremy Heber’s design of the prison bar cufflinks couldn’t be any more apt and meaningful. Indeed, this pair of Jeremy Heber cufflinks are a must-have for designer cufflinks collectors. The hands that are made of gold can easily be attributed to King Midas the greedy who is, in this case, already behind the bars.

In hindsight, there is nothing wrong with seeking more wealth and property than what is necessary so long as you are not usurping other people’s properties, or is there? Try to zoom out the condition to get a glimpse of the ways and means the class ABC gets richer in a capitalist society. It’s difficult to notice any form of abuse or extortion at first glance. It’s because nothing of that is happening if you base it on the logic of capitalism which is the logic of profit-making.

In a capitalist society, people are encouraged to earn surplus money which means money that does not really provide for human being’s fundamental needs such as food, shelter, clothing, education, security, etc. Instead, people are encouraged to earn more profit masqueraded as savings for emergency needs. Again, you wouldn’t find anything wrong with saving for the future. None, unless the person becomes a slave of the idea of earning more profit than what is necessary. When that happens, his tendency is to try spending less effort and less capital for more profit.

To illustrate, let’s take jewelry-making as an example. To ensure more profit, a capitalist would search for cheaper raw materials and much cheaper labor as possible. For example, the raw materials cost $10 and the labor costs $5 per cufflink, the capitalist is entitled to sell the cufflinks for $50. One may notice the difference between the effort of the capitalist and the laborer on the same product and wonders about the irony. The former has more savings to spare while the latter could not even buy the very cufflinks he made. And that’s the legal way of distributing resources in a society like ours.
