The flag Jolly Rodger has been significant to pirates. It doesn’t literally have to have the skull and crossbones emblem for it to be called Jolly Rodger. All pirate flags are called Jolly Rodger, whatever the design is.
There aren’t many sources that can tell us where the term “Jolly Rodger” came from. Many people suggested that it came from the French jolie rouge, which translates to “pretty red”. Some say it was an old nickname for the devil itself, Old Rodger. Others think that it is a name of an old idolized pirate known as Woodes Rodger—an English sea captain who later on became a Royal Governor of Bahamas. He also inspired Daniel Defoe to write Robinson Crusoe.
Pirates, though defiant of the law, are most loved by children and adults alike. We all love hearing stories about them. They were made famous by characters like Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean .” He then became the pirate we all want to be with or become especially because it is played by one of the most beloved actor of this generation, Johnny Depp.
