If you’re a new professional, and still not acquainted with the art of professional dressing, then it’s about time you learn how to tie a tie. The necktie is considered as one of the most important clothing accessories in every formal attire, so you should really equip yourself with the skill to tie one.
Learning how to tie a tie need not be hard. In fact, it can be done in just 5 minutes! Since there are four types of knots in tying a tie, let’s just go over 2 of the most basic ones.
The Windsor Knot is a wide, thick and triangular tie knot that exudes self-confidence. Therefore, it’s the best choice for job interviews, presentations, courtroom appearances, and other events where you want to look confident. Also, the Windsor Knot is suitable for spread collar shirts.
First, position the tie around your neck so that the wide end extends about 12 inches below the narrow end. Then cross the wide end over the narrow end. Afterwards, bring the wide end up through the loop in the space between the collar and your tie, and then bring it back down.
Pull the wide end from left to right underneath the narrow end, and back through the loop, and bring it to the right again. At this point, the wide end should be inside out. Then, from right to left, bring the wide end across the front, and bring it up through the loop once again. Afterwards, bring the wide end down and have it pass through the knot you made in front.
Use both hands to tighten the knot and draw it up to the collar, and you’re done! It’s best if you position yourself in front of the mirror to avoid ending up cross-eyed and dizzy. You could also try practicing with other people or objects around your home until you get the perfect Windsor Knot.
Next, learn how to tie a tie in a Half Windsor Knot. It’s a symmetrical and triangular tie knot perfect for any dress shirt. To start, do the first 2 steps as in the Windsor knot. Once you have the wide and narrow end crossed, bring the wide end around and behind the narrow end. Then, bring the wide end up and pull it through the loop. From right to left, bring the wide end around front and over the narrow end. Once more, bring the wide end up and through the loop, and bring it down passing through the knot you made in front. Use both hands to tighten the knot and adjust it to the collar and you just learned how to tie a tie in a Half Windsor Knot!
Those are just some knots you can make in learning how to tie a tie. There are many more knots with varying shapes and forms, so take time to learn how to tie a tie using the other knots.
